An absolutely beautiful essay, John. Just read it to Cat. Thank you for continuing to fill our space with the sounds, thoughts, and the wonderful physical presence you have whether playing an instrument, running a marathon, or just being.

Big Johnny,

That is an absolutely remarkable piece of writing. So moving and so clear eyed in its wisdom. What I find so touching is that it is very much like its author, a man I have known for 47 years; a considerate, focused, winning, reflective, completely committed and deeply intelligent man.

You strike me as not unlike Melville's Catskill Eagle. "And there is a Catskill eagle in some souls that can alike dive down into the blackest gorges, and soar out of them again and become invisible in the sunny spaces. And even if he for ever flies within the gorge, that gorge is in the mountains; so that even in his lowest swoop the mountain eagle is still higher than other birds upon the plain, even though they soar."

I look forward to more. I will share this big time. Xoxoxoxo, Rob Mathes
